India’s green hydrogen economy is growing fast. India’s largest green
hydrogen and ammonia production so far was commissioned in 1962 in
cooperation with the predecessor company of Thyssenkrupp Nucera. The Nangal plant had a design
capacity of 310 tons per day (tpd) of ammonia based on water
electrolysis. Ammonia was converted first to nitric acid and then to
calcium ammonium nitrate (CAN). The plant had important energy needs
(149 MW); these were being met by the hydroelectric plant of the Bakhra
Dam located a few miles from Nangal. Today, just as 60 years ago, India
stands at the forefront of the global green hydrogen economy. Numerous
outstanding Indian companies are actively engaged in developing
innovative projects, some of which are listed here.
