“Green Steel” shall be defined in terms of percentage greenness of the steel, which is produced from the steel plant with CO2 equivalent emission intensity less than 2.2 tonnes of CO2e per tonne of finished steel (tfs). The greenness of the steel shall be expressed as a percentage, based on how much the steel plant’s emission intensity is lower compared to the 2.2 t-CO2e/tfs threshold.

SECI inks MoU with H2Global Stiftung to advance Green Hydrogen Initiatives
SECI signed an MoU with H2Global Stiftung to establish a collaborative framework to promote GH2 initiatives. This aims to enhance knowledge exchange on market-based mechanisms and foster cooperation between India and importing countries, thereby contributing to the global advancement of the green hydrogen economy. This collaboration offers India the opportunity to work on joint tender design concepts, particularly in structuring joint tenders that aligns with India’s ambition to become export hub of Green Hydrogen and its derivatives. The cooperation may provide valuable insights into global hydrogen market dynamics, including trade logistics and stakeholder engagement, which can be instrumental in furthering India’s green hydrogen initiatives.

Government organizes workshop on Quality Control in Green Hydrogen; deliberations held on Quality Standards, Testing Infrastructure and Ease of Doing Business
The government held a day-long workshop on “Quality Control in Green Hydrogen: Standards and Testing Infrastructure” at Sushma Swaraj Bhawan, New Delhi on May 8, 2024. The workshop convened by the Union Ministry of New and Renewable Energy deliberated on actions needed to create a homogeneous ecosystem for Green Hydrogen production processes through clear quality standards. On the occasion, a dedicated portal for the National Green Hydrogen Mission was launched, which would serve as a one-stop location for information on the Mission and steps taken for the development of the green hydrogen ecosystem in India. The portal was launched jointly by Principal Scientific Advisor to Government of India Prof. Ajay Kumar Sood and Secretary, Ministry of New and Renewable Energy, Shri Bhupinder S. Bhalla. India announces definition of Green Hydrogen
The standard issued by the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE), Government of India outlines the emission thresholds that must be met in order for hydrogen produced to be classified as ‘Green’, i.e., from renewable sources. The scope of the definition encompasses both electrolysis-based and biomass-based hydrogen production methods. After discussions with multiple stakeholders, MNRE has decided to define Green Hydrogen as having a well-to-gate emission (i.e., including water treatment, electrolysis, gas purification, drying and compression of hydrogen) of not more than 2-kilogram Carbon dioxide equivalent per kg H2.

The 4th Energy Transitions Working Group Meeting under India’s G20 Presidency will be held in Goa during July 19 – 20, 2023. This will be followed by the G20 Energy Ministerial meeting on July 22, 2023, which would be held under the chairpersonship of Union Minister for Power and New and Renewable Energy, Shri R. K. Singh.On the margins of the G20 Energy Transitions Ministerial and Working Group Meetings, the 14th Clean Energy Ministerial (CEM) and 8th Mission Innovation (MI) meeting (CEM14/MI-8) will also be held in Goa during 19th to 21st of July, 2023, . The CEM / MI Ministerial Meeting would be held on 21st July, 2023, under the chairpersonship of Union Minister for Power and New and Renewable Energy, Shri R. K. Singh. Union Minister for Science and Technology Dr. Jitendra Singh will be the vice-chair of the CEM/MI meeting.

The Government of India, in collaboration with the Confederation of Indian Industries (CII), successfully concluded the three-day International Conference on Green Hydrogen (ICGH) 2023 on Friday at Vigyan Bhavan, New Delhi. Throughout the conference, which witnessed over three days of intense deliberations, with more than 2700 delegates, 135 speakers, seven plenary sessions, 16 technical sessions, and four panel discussions, experts focused on the green hydrogen ecosystem.

International Conference on Green Hydrogen to be held in New Delhi during July 5 – 7, 2023
The Government of India is organizing an International Conference on Green Hydrogen (ICGH-2023) during 5th – 7th July 2023 at Vigyan Bhawan, New Delhi, to bring together the global scientific and industrial community to discuss recent advances and emerging technologies in the entire green hydrogen value chain. The conference will enable the sector stakeholders to explore the evolving green hydrogen landscape and innovation-driven solutions in the sector.

50 GW of renewable energy capacity annually for next 5 years to achieve the target of 500 GW by 2030
The Government has decided to invite bids for 50 GW of renewable energy capacity annually for the next five years i.e., from Financial Year 2023-24 till Financial Year 2027-28. These annual bids of ISTS (Inter-State Transmission) connected renewable energy capacity will also include setting up of wind power capacity of at least 10 GW per annum. The plan finalized by Ministry of New & Renewable Energy (MNRE) at a meeting chaired by Union Minister for Power & NRE Shri R. K. Singh last week, is in accordance with Prime Minister’s announcement at COP26, of achieving 500 GW of installed electricity capacity from non-fossil fuel (Renewable Energy + Nuclear) sources by 2030.India currently has a total renewable energy capacity of 168.96 GW (as on 28th February 2023) with about 82 GW at various stages of implementation and about 41 GW under tendering stage. This includes 64.38 GW Solar Power, 51.79 GW Hydro Power, 42.02 GW Wind Power and 10.77 GW Bio Power.

PM will address the first post-budget webinar on Green Growth on 23rd February 2023. It is a part of 12 post-budget webinars being organized by government to seek ideas for implementation of budgetary announcements. The webinar will be attended by stakeholders including prominent industrialists, experts and state government officials. 12 initiatives announced in Union Budget on Green Growth to be discussed in six parallel sessions. Cabinet approves National Green Hydrogen Mission
The Union Cabinet, chaired by the Hon’ble Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi, has approved National Green Hydrogen Mission. The initial outlay for the Mission will be Rs. 19,744 crore, including an outlay of Rs. 17,490 crore for the SIGHT programme, Rs. 1,466 crore for pilot projects, Rs. 400 crore for R&D, and Rs. 388 crore towards other Mission components. MNRE will formulate the scheme guidelines for implementation of the respective components.
